In the first-ever move that would adversely affect flight operations to the US, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on 31 January 2014 downgraded India’s aviation safety ranking, bringing it below Pakistan and at par with countries like Ghana, Barbados and Bangladesh. Air passengers to and from the US may have to face the brunt as Indian airplanes would have to go through more engineering and other safety checks on the American soil. What would be the main effect of this downgrade on Indian airline companies?

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has lowered India’s aviation safety ranking, finding regulatory oversight to be inadequate, in a move that would impede efforts by Air India Ltd and Jet Airways (India) Ltd to expand flights to American destinations and subject them to stricter scrutiny.

2. Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC)
Life Insurance Corporation of India, the largest insurer of the country, has over Rs 7,000 crore in tax demand pending against it, the biggest across various categories.

3. Rajasthan

Delhi’s power distribution companies Friday hiked their surcharge, and as a result the city’s power tariff would increase six to eight percent from Saturday. According to the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC), the BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL) increased its tariff eight percent, BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) by six percent and Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL) by seven percent.

Shri Mohan Tiwari, Chairman-cum-Managing Director, Ircon International Limited (IRCON), received the Gold Trophy for Project export at 45th National Awards for Export Excellence for the year 2012-13 were given away by Engineering Export Promotion Council (EEPC) India.

  • This downgrade would effectively bar Air India and Jet Airways from increasing flights to the US from the current level
  • They would also not be able to enter into any new code-share relationships with any US airline
(The downgrade does not mean that these airlines are unsafe but shows that the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA’s) safety oversight is not enough to properly monitor safety performance of Indian carriers. As per the FAA, the downgrade means that the DGCA does not meet the safety standards set by UN agency International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO))
